Surprisingly good film with a more toned down type of hero for star Willis. Synopsis. 115 out of 168 found this helpful Then there is the one who makes 'hating heavies' a way of life, Alec Baldwin, who always can appear meaner that a bull- rattle snake. Lindsey Ginter is the real main villain in my opinion as Alec Baldwin was absolutely terrible and barely to be seen!, plus i thought Willis gave one of his best performances here!. 55 out of 83 found this helpful Willis plays Art Jeffries, an undercover FBI agent who protects a nine-year-old autistic boy, Simon Lynch (played by Miko Hughes), who is targeted by government assassins after he cracks a top secret government code.
Jeffries meets Crandell who tells him about "Mercury" and Kudrow, but Crandell is shot dead by Burrell before he can reveal everything. They fight on the roof, but Simon walks to the edge of the roof and gets Kudrow's gun, giving it to Jeffries who forces the corrupt NSA chief back. Mercury Rising received a poor reception, a fate that movies of mixed genre's often received. I guess I am one of a few that really enjoyed this picture.
The character development in this film is particularly good between Bruce and the little autistic boy. Kim Dickens strikes so many points perfectly it is amazing: vulnerable, normal, brave, frightened, kind, attractive, helpful. But then I remembered my own experiences, and I think the whole movie, crazy government plot and all, rings true. Finally, Bruce Willis and Miko Hughes have a great on-screen chemistry together. Jeffries, with Jordan and an FBI task force's help, sets a trap at the meeting spot. The Fifth Element was good, but The Siege, Armageddon and Mercury Rising were stretching it for the star. 1998 was a bad year. 6/10 i watched this movie as it was being shown on TV. Mercury Rising is a very conventional "government bad guys" story about evil agents out to kill an autistic boy who can break their top code. Synopsis Jeffries and Tommy must avoid a series of deadly traps while searching for Simon and T.J. when they are kidnapped by a mob boss the day after New Years', while Stacey attempts to reconcile an issue between her parents. I think it is because there isn't a lot of dialog. Alec Baldwin. **** Willis is impressive (and softer) as an F.B.I. Miko Hughes is incredibly convincing as the Autustic kid in my opinion, and i feel this is treated very unfairly by critics and movie fans alike!, plus i loved the ending it was very cute and made me smile!. Look past those aspects. The movie left me feeling like a lot was missing from it.
As the sort of troubled outcast on somewhat good-terms Willis is a master. I saw the movie and was pretty impressed the way the relation between Bruce and the autistic boy was depicted.
After I saw Domestic Disturbance, I wondered what other movies Harold Becker had directed. 8 out of 12 found this helpful this was a really good movie. 13 out of 16 found this helpful Rest of the cast do fine. Chi McBride is good with what he had to do, i rather liked him.
There is a lot of garbage made these days, and it is refreshing to see a story that you can watch and take something else away, the next viewing as well. Granted, there could be more action. Baldwin is as delightfully detestable as we know he can be. Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Mercury Rising at Amazon.com.

Program chief Nick Kudrow (Alec Baldwin) orders the "security threat" eliminated, but Kudrow hasn't counted on Jeffries getting involved. But anyone would have to agree that Miko Hughes, who portrayed the autistic 9yr old "Simon", gave a performance just as touching and realistic as the young boy from The Sixth Sense. Mercury Rising had good action, good dialogue and good emotion. Well worth watching! Of course, the premise of the movie, that the government would rather kill someone who can break their code rather than fixing the problems with the code, is incredibly stupid. Sure, there are some clichés. Shadowy elements in the NSA target a nine-year old autistic savant for death when he is able to decipher a top secret code. When he is sent to investigate the death of the Lynches, he discovers little Simon hidden in a secret hiding place. Leave it to young, autistic, Simon Lynch, it only takes him a few moments to solve the enigma code. Posing as a police detective, Burrell gains entry to the Lynch household and unceremoniously shoots both Simon's mother and father with a Jeffries is sent to investigate and finds Simon in a hidden The NSA, under Kudrow's direction, frames Jeffries as kidnapper of Simon.
